Forty-six museums in France were visited by the writer in 1974 and 1977 as listed in Table1 and shown in Fig. 1. Typological classification of them is made as follows;

1. Natural science museum

2. Archaeology, history and ethnology museum

3. Local museum

4. Christian art museum

5. Industrial and decorative arts museum

6. The Resistance museum

7. Other type museum (alpine, cooking, marine, commerce and so on)

Museum activities as collection, exhibition and education etc. are discussed and characteristic of museums in France is summarized.
