Elasmobranchus specimens collected from the Pliocene Na-arai formation are studied taxonomically and statistically. It is concluded that a. Carcharodon rondeletii (Müller and Henle) is synonimous to C. carcharias (Linné), b. Japanese specimens from the Neogene and Quaternary formations belong to Carcharodon megalodon (Agassiz) and C. Carcharias (Linné), c. C. megalodon is the representative of the Miocene, and the Pliocene and Quaternary one is C. carcharias. The difference in two species of Carcharodon is seen in the results of measurement of some features as follows; OCH/OCL (mean) C. carcharias 1.15 > C. megalodon 0.64 number of serration in 10 mm (mean) C. carcharias 11.6–11.7 < C. megalodon 14.8–16.1
