Thirteen samples from the surface sediments of mangrove swamps in Singapore contain rich mangrove pollen such as Rhizophora and Excoecaria. Three po1len assemblage types are recognized; R-R type predominated by Rhizophora, R-O type dominated by Rhizophora and non-mangrove pollen, and E-O type dominated by Excoecaria and non-mangrove pollen. These types represent the vegetation around the site and not near, the site. R-R type characterizes the vegetation of islands broadly covered by mangrove, R-O type representing the outer mangrove and land vegetation of the main island, E-O type showing the inland mangrove and land vegetation of the main island. These results would provide the basis for the interpretation of the paleoenvironment. More than 20% of the mangrove pollen content could be the criteria for the mangrove swamp paleoenvironment. Pollen assemblage types would be useful proxies for paleogeography.
