Time-stratigraphic classification of the Neogene strata (Mizuho-Tô) by Hatai (1962, 1967) has been reviewed to clarify the Neogene molluscan fauna of Japan, because numerous important articles on stratigraphy and paleontology have been published after the Hatai's proposal. Based upon the revised subdivision the historical changes of the Neogene molluscan fauna with special reference to pectinids around the Japanese Islands are described.
